The HMS Victory at Trafalgar
is a work of art which has
seen significant world wide attention.
The
United States Sailing Association (the national governing body for
the sport of sailing) presented a giclee print as a major award to Tom Hubbell
at the Associations Spring Meeting on March 17, 2006.
Tom Hubbell spearheaded the reorganization of US SAILING and the by
laws changes approved on Oct 12, 2005 the anniversary of the Battle
of Trafalgar. Both events had a part in reshaping the future of
sailing.
Shown in the picture to the right, is Janice Baxter, President of US
SAILING presenting the picture to Tom Hubbell.
A number of artists have also produced unauthorized copies of the
painting. None of R.C. Moore's works are can be reproduced or
copied without his permission.
 The
painting was copied and flipped horizontally and used on stamps for the
Countries of Moldavia and St Vincent's and the Grenadines. It
should be noted that by flipping the painting horizontally, the
direction of sail of the French Line and wind direction were changed
and the images lost their historical accuracy. During the
battle, as the British approached, the French line sailed from right
to left and the wind direction was off the HMS Victory's starboard
bow.
Artists
have also been found to paint similar paintings (see picture to the
right).
An
unauthorized copy of the painting was even sold on E-Bay as a
ceramic tile (shown on the left).
